Father’s Day ~ ~ June 2008
When Father's Day comes around and you own a men's store, what else do you write your marketing email about? Your own Dad!
My Dad
will be 86 in September. He lives with my mother, his wife of 56 years, in the
Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York and spends most of his days tinkering
with small projects, mowing the lawn on his riding mower, driving my Mom to the
grocery store, walking with his golden retriever Colby, and taking naps while
listening to the opera. He always has the perfect "thing" in the
basement or the barn to fix whatever has been broken. He flies the American
flag every day and when I visit he flies the Washington State flag. He grew up
in the depression and served in WWII. He enjoys any and all things chocolate
and a peanut butter sandwich at lunch is all he needs. Every dinner my mom
cooks has always been the best meal he's ever had. He is the definitive
"good egg."
I recall
one Father's Day in 1964 or 1965, my mother helped my sister and I make a felt
and sequin "Best Dad Award" it was about 8 inches in size and
he wore it... wore it all day during our Father's Day outing to the World's
Fair in Flushing Meadows, Queens. It really didn't matter what or how we
recognized Dad on Father's Day, it was that we did. It was his day and he loved
spending it with his family. The pencil holder, I made from a tin can, art clay
and pebbles still sits next to his PC full of pencils and pens.
My father,
really isn't all that snappy a dresser, though I've seen some photos from his
"courting days" in the 1950's and he's got a great collection of what
are now vintage bowties ... and he did have style, still does, his cutting
grass attire is purely a sight to behold! Almost as good as his "climbing
on the roof to tar" outfit. My mom was thrilled when I sent him a pair of
jeans from OSLO's and she mandated he wasn't to wear them unless taking her to
dinner. He's proud of those jeans, because they are from his son's shop in
Seattle. It doesn't take much to make my Dad happy or proud of his family. He enjoys
time with my mom, my sister & brother-in-law, me, and his two golden
retriever grand pups: Molly & Oslo. In the perfect world we'd all be a
short walk away.
Father's
Day 2008 is Sunday, June 15th. OSLO's A Men's Store has all kinds of great items your Dad would love
and would only enhance his very unique and individual style, (well, maybe not
to tar the roof.) At OSLO's it might be the experience of a traditional
straight edge razor shave, a polo knit from Victorinox, or a James Perse tee.
Honor Dad
this year on Father's Day, make a phone call, send a card or gift, or hold
tight to a favorite memory!
Remember whatever Dad's style, we are here to help,
(even with the felt and sequins*).
To all our
customers who are Dads and to my very special Dad back in New York: HAPPY
FATHER'S DAY - 2008.
Sincerely,
John McDowell
